I love colour wheels.

Each arty/crafty course I've ever done always starts with colour theory and ideas to create colour wheels. 

This idea, by that artist woman, is a new one to me and really appeals... since I like sketchbooks, project books, colour wheels, reference guides and all in one kits!

I'm currently on the look out for inspiration for The Woolly Brew Felt Flower Kits.

So I sat down with a stack of magazines and pulled out 3 pages.

Some paper weaving and a bit of photo jiggery pokery and I got these...

To follow this exercise through properly I should really make up some little felt shade cards...

Taken yesterday.

Today the sky has been grey all over, all day....

But then I got abit impulsive with a pencil and started sketching lines, which I didn't like... I then washed it which surprisingly removed the pencil marks but the colour ran... oh dear.

So I started again

Still a work in progress but I'm not sure I like this version either...

E has requested a rainbow cake for her birthday at the end of August.

After a look on Google Images and some debate, she has decided on:-

a plain vanilla sponge (thank goodness, I didn't fancy the multi coloured sponges)
blue icing (for a sky) with a rainbow flat on the cake (rather than standing up or reaching off the cake)
I think she wants a rectangle cake BUT I will have to clarify this as she has been quite adamant recently that birthday cakes are round...
I may add some marshmallow clouds...

I'm not sure how to do it though - colouring icing (I have done this on a small scale), cutting out and assembling rainbow (I'll need a template), which food colouring (Dr Oetker)?  In fact are food colourings safe?  Can I mix them, so I just need to buy 3?...

Studio Journal - another colour pile

Trapped indoors on a very rainy day E and I did some cutting and pasting.  I ripped out some cold blue and juicy orange pages from a glossy magazine.  A popular colour choice in the June issue of Marie Claire.  I cut the pages into strips then squares and spread them out on a page.  I took a photo then did some 'manipulation'...

I really like how some of the detail of the original squares shows through in the black and white versions.

Whilst attaching some loose pages into my sketchbook I came across this cross stitch sample.

I did it ages ago by blending single strands of red, blue and yellow threads.  The front can be seen in this post

However the backside (as usual) looks so much better!

some watercolour paper, watercolour paint, a big paint brush, bubble wrap, small box, tube, kitchen paper and cling film. 

add a willing painting partner (Captain Reindeer) and an idea for yet another project, seen on the front page of the recent issue of Cloth Paper Scissors issue 28.

I had a subscription to Gardeners World magazine.

They were piling up.

So ahead of the recycling bin I cut them up - looking for inspiring colours, structures, textures.

I photographed some of the best clippings (scraps?) and I've used them here and here.

I'm not sure what to do with all the other bits but I created a quick colour wheel as a start (not much blue!)


and of course some photo editing (with an eye on fabric scraps and stitching marks...)
