knitting needle wrap

I've recently (finally) acquired some Knit Pro interchangeable needles.

These are tips (the knitting needle bit) which screw onto cables.  You get different lengths of cables and also little bits that can screw onto the cables when you take your needles off to use them on other projects.

You can use them as circular needles or just simply knit back and forth for flat knitting.

I only have 3 needle tips and 2 cables (120cm) but I'd like to get more as I like the wooden needles...

So obviously I will need another knitting needle case to store them in, and with my newly acquired fabric stash in mind I found this tutorial.

Despite having lots of other stuff to do I spent a few hours today making this...

I need to get a zip before sewing the whole lot together...

(and insert the zip)

Now... zips, who knew there are so many different types?

fabric stash

Whilst looking for fabric for my ABC Crewel Sampler I happened to stumble upon some fabric sales...

Combined with a few pieces I picked up last month I now have quite stash!  Most are fat quarters and a few are metre lengths.

Wee Wonderfuls by Hillary Lang

Amazingly this book was available through the library!

I've followed Hillary Lang's blog for several years, admired her stitchette patterns and even bought one of her patterns.

As a very (very) occasional sewer I couldn't justify buying the book so had an eye out for it in my library...

It is very cute!

Goldilocks (a red cape is also included to make her Red Riding Hood!)

gorgeous yarn hair and pattern for matching doll quilt

comes with a pattern for a girl's apron

There are lots of other designs - boys and animals -  but the girls are my favourite.

However Nearly School Girl has picked THIS!

Not quite as cute and a little obscure... oh well...

There is a flickr photo pool here.

I finally got a new bag... I do still hope to sew my own bag... one day...

I embellished this one with a Woolly Brew Felt Flower Kit.

new fabric

My mother in law brought me back some fabric pieces from New Zealand.

I'm thinking more hexagons...

The top right fabric is from the same collection as this fabric I bought for my needle roll.  One bought in New Zealand the other bought in  Lower Largo, Fife.

crayon roll

Yeah!  I have finally made one.  It has been on my to do list for a long time - as a simple roll or something more complicated.

My Four Year Old has never shown any interest in having one (despite having a huge collection of well used drawing materials).

So I've made one for my friend's little girl who is one year and a bit.  E loved her crayons then and we were lucky that she didn't eat stuff that shouldn't be eaten or scribble where she shouldn't.

This crayon roll is made from felt with a cotton pocket.  I used what I had to hand although initially I did buy some felt as I didn't think I had a big enough piece.  However I bought acrylic felt (which was all the craft shop had and I didn't have time to wait for my favourite wool blend felt to be delivered) and it is AWFUL!

I'm really pleased I managed to find some wool blend pieces big enough.

I used the same principles as my knitting needle roll but obviously smaller and less complicated.

I'm very pleased how it turned out and I really really like sewing with felt.

If I were to make it again I would change the following...

1. I used chubby crayons and took their thickness into account when making my pockets (4.5cm width) BUT I didn't take it into account when calculating the height of the pocket.  I think the pocket needs to be a little bit higher.

2.  I would sew the colour squares onto the pockets BEFORE I sew the thing up.  I didn't think of it until I had finished and popped all the crayons in.

3.   I would have done a different fastening as the ribbon covers the monogram on the front.

soft furnishings

These are a gift for Four Year Old's best friend...

The rug is a triumphant!  I'm very pleased how it turned out.  Its the same pattern as this one except I cast on 30 stitches and used bright pink and pale pink yarn.

The bed 'quilt' is reversible too...

I'm working on a living room set too.

toadstool

I've made a toadstool for Four Year Old's garden playmat.

I used this excellent pattern and instructions at Little House by the Sea.

I highly recommend it!
